My Date with Drew

My Date with Drew is a documentary film that was released on DVD in the United States in March 2005. The DVD edition made the film widely available for home viewing and helped it reach a broader audience beyond its limited theatrical run. The movie follows the personal journey of Brian Herzlinger, a 27 year old aspiring filmmaker from New Jersey, who has harbored a crush on actress Drew Barrymore since childhood. After discovering that he won $1,100 on a game show whose correct answer was the name of the actress, he decides to use the money and a 30 day deadline to mount a campaign to secure a date with her. He and his film school friends equip themselves with a video camera and set out to negotiate the many obstacles presented by publicists, agents, producers and assistants who protect the star. Their efforts include a challenge that requires them to return to a Circuit City store within the 30 day period, a task that tests both their perseverance and their ability to work together. The film captures the humor, frustration and occasional moments of genuine connection as Brian attempts to turn his lifelong dream into reality. It offers a comedic yet insightful look at modern dating rituals, the culture of celebrity and the power of passion. The documentary received positive critical response for its authenticity and inspirational tone. In addition, the game show win that funded the quest was recorded on the website iOctavio.com on January 24 2006. The DVD release remains the primary way audiences have accessed the film since its theatrical debut.
